I consider myself very fortunate to be able to run my own business and to have found a career that I truly enjoy. How many of you out there can honestly say "I love my job"? Lately, I have felt the need to give back to the community and to the animals that give me so much. I started volunteering my services to the animals in need at the Peterborough Humane Society www.peterboroughhumanesociety.ca/ So far I have taken on 2 very dirty kitties. "Sharky" was the first kitty who desperately needed my attention. She is a black and white, female, shorthair cat who could stand to lose a couple of lbs. Sharky was a perfect angel while she was in my care, allowing me to brush her, cut her nails AND even bathe her. Sharky has a bit of a sad story though. She has been living at the Humane Society for over a year and she looks like she is starting to give up hope of ever finding a home. Sharky keeps her back to the door of the cage and spends most of her time sleeping. She is quiet until you approach her and then she purrs loudly. The people at the Peterborough Humane Society have a very tough job and I feel they do the best they can to ensure that the animals are well looked after but their resources are limited. We have a HUGE cat overpopulation in this city and they are just a small shelter that runs entirely on donations. Hello. This is my first time ever participating in a “blog” and I promise I will try my best to hold your interest.
My name is Becki and I wanted to put together this website to share my - at the risk of sounding cliché - passion in life, dogs. Well actually dogs is just the beginning, in fact, all living things fascinate me and I have chosen to surround myself with them for my entire adult life.
I operate my own pet grooming business and I like to refer to myself as a “Pet Stylist”. Owning my own business has proven to be challenging, stimulating and eye-opening. I enjoy many things about what I do such as making my own schedule, having creative input, controlling all aspects of day to day dealings etc…but none of these things gives me more pleasure than working with people and their pets.
I don’t think I can accurately describe how I feel about my “job” without telling you about a special someone. Crickit is my special little companion who came into my life 6 years ago. Crickit is a Boston Terrier and she has taught me more about love, compassion, patience, and responsibility than anything else. She was the first “pet” that I acquired as an adult and I can’t imagine life without her. Whenever I work on a difficult pet and start to get frustrated, I think of Crickit and how the animal that I am working with at that moment means as much to someone as she does to me.
I would like to dedicate this first blog entry to my little Black and White friend because she is the reason I can do what I do AND enjoy it!
In the future I would like to use this blog as a place to share stories and experiences with you about my adventures as a Pet Stylist. My adventures have included dogs that pee on me everytime I touch them, cats that say “NOOOOO” when they get wet and various parasites that I have come across. In case you are new to the “Grooming World” you may find these entries to paint a different picture of what I do – it is certainly not glamorous but I can’t imagine doing anything else!
